Symptoms of Cataracts

As the cataract gets denser, you may notice that your vision is blurry despite glasses. You may notice glare and halos making it difficult to drive. If the cataract affects vision to the extent that it interferes with your quality of life, you should consider cataract surgery. The alternative is to live with the cataracts but your vision likely will get worse.
What Happens During Cataract Surgery?
Cataract surgery is performed at an outpatient ambulatory surgery center (ASC). When you arrive at the facility, you will get eyedrops to prepare the eye for surgery. An IV will be placed for sedation and anesthesia prior to the surgery.
During Femtosecond Laser Assisted surgery, the anterior opening of the lens bag (capsule), will be precisely made with the laser, and the lens will be softened with the laser. Additionally, laser may be used to correct your astigmatism. You will see a lot of lights and feel some cool fluid.
The eyelids and lashes will be cleaned and surgical drapes are placed around the eye to keep the operating area sterile. Small incisions are then made and the cataract is removed using ultrasound energy. An intraocular lens implant is inserted through the premade small opening of the eye. It allows images to focus on the retina with clarity.

The intraocular lens can correct for distance (e.g. driving/watching movies), intermediate (e.g. computer), near (e.g. reading), or all three ranges. Some patients may still need to wear glasses, especially in dim light settings and for very small prints.
